Last Tuesday, my 8-year-old walked into the kitchen to find me wiping tears from my eyes. I had just received news that a close friend was moving across the country, and I was genuinely sad about it. Instead of immediately hiding my emotions, I acknowledged them openly. “I’m feeling sad because my friend is moving far away,” I explained. My child looked surprised—she’d never seen me express sadness so openly. “Will you be okay, Mom?” she asked with concern.
